Unexpected Power Failures

With the recent power failures more and more companies are at risk of their server shutting down unexpectedly. Even though you may have a UPS attached to the server it may not be configured properly. Maybe the UPS doesn’t have enough runtime to successfully shutdown the server. What if the power goes out on the weekend when no one is in the office? Does someone have to be physically at the server in the event of a power failure to shutdown the servers?

A properly configured UPS setup automatically sends a signal to each server connected to it. This signal triggers the server to shutdown gracefully, instead of having the power removed from it immediately. If a server is not shutdown properly you may be at risk of data corrupting. Depending on the extent of the corrupting this could cause major server downtime.

So don’t let your company fail due to a old, tired UPS that has been sitting there collecting dust. Get it checked out now before it’s too late!!                                                                                                           By Peter Sheridan

Are you Backing Up Your Data?

If there is one part of advice that we could impart on to our clients, it would be to create regular back-ups of your data. It is easy to forget to create a daily back-up with the amount the large work loads that we each have. One way of remembering to change your back-up tapes over is to set a reminder in your Microsoft Outlook calendar. By creating a recurring appointment for 5 minutes prior to the end of your day, you will receive a pop-up reminder on your screen (and a tone if you wish) to remind you.

After the daily back-ups are in place, a weekly back-up is the next priority. Set this to run on a Friday afternoon (or Monday morning before commencing work for the week). Then a monthly and end of financial year back-up are necessary.

By ingraining this back-up methodology into your daily work duties, you will ensure that if the need ever arises to restore to your back-up, you will have the most recent and valuable information available.                                                                                                                                                                     By Carly Schmarr
